Aim and Significance of Hysteroscopy

  • Osamu Sugimoto

The uterus is an organ with highly hemorrhagic tendencies. Abnormal uterine bleeding is one of the most common gynecological disorders; it may result from various intrauterine abnormalities, and occurs regardless of the patient’s age. The traditional gynecological examinations, including analysis of anamnesis, speculum and pelvic examination, cytology smears, and biopsies, do not always lead to correct diagnosis. Additional imaging techniques such as hysterography, ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be equally equivocal.
