High-Resolution Measurement of Pulse Wave Velocity for Evaluating Local Elasticity of Arterial Wall in Early-Stage Arteriosclerosis

Abstract

In order to diagnose cardiovascular system based on acoustic characteristics of the heart muscle or aortic wall, it is necessary to measure small vibrations on these walls [1]. However, the amplitude of the cardiac motion is very large during one beat period. Thus, it is very difficult for previously proposed methods or standard ultrasonic diagnosis systems to measure these small vibration signals. We have proposed, therefore, a new method to track accurately object motion, and by applying the method to the aortic wall or heart wall, small vibrations of these surfaces can be observed.
