Since tympanoplasty was carried out as a routine procedure in surgery for chronic otitis media (particularly for patients with cholesteatoma) for several decades, various techniques and procedures have been developed and reported by almost every otological surgeon. However, there appear to be several issues which are still controversial and remain unsolved. Some examples are listed below.
