Ventricular septal defect with aortic insufficiency in the Philippines

Abstract

Ventricular septal defect (VSD) with aortic insufficiency (AI) has gained prominence as a syndrome as it almost invariably leads to diminished exercise tolerance and subsequent heart failure after a nonsymptomatic period ranging from 2 to several years. Nadas and his associates [1] reported an incidence of 4.6%, while Tatsuno et al [2] in 1973 quoted an incidence of 8.2%. Another important feature of the syndrome that the latter authors emphasized was the high incidence of subpulmonic VSD (78% of 91 cases). This is different from the incidence reported in the USA and Europe, where the subpulmonic and infracristal types of VSD occur with more or less equal frequency.
