Hepatitis B Virus Infection, Its Sequelae, and Prevention in Taiwan

  • Ding-Shinn Chen

Abstract

Viral hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are common in Taiwan [1–3]. In 1984, malignant neoplasms ranked first in the causes of death with an annual rate of 81.95/ 100000 population, and cirrhosis was sixth at a rate of 16.65/100000 [4]. Among the cancer deaths, 21% were attributed to HCC, which was the leading cause of cancer mortality for men and the third for women [4]. These statistics reflect the prevalence and importance of chronic liver diseases and HCC in Taiwan.
