Abstract

In order to facilitate the estimation of the risk of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) in the first degree relatives of the patients we established the registration of families and the construction of their genealogies. Individuals who are at risk for the disease should be screened at regular intervals and appropriate treatment of the premalignant lesions should be offered. The value of a registry of FAP families is proven by the identification of many fist-degree relatives of FAP patients who were at risk for the disease and had not been screened yet. Moreover it appeared that many individuals were unnecessary under surveillance. Finally it was found that screening could lead to the early detection of FAP patients and eventually to a decrease in the incidence of colorectal cancer in their families.
