Hanot and Gilbert [5] first undertook a gross classification of primary liver cancer in 1888. They divided primary liver cancer into three types: (1) cancer massif, (2) cancer nodulaire, and (3) cancer avec cirrhose. This classification was modified in 1901 by Eggel [6], who painstakingly reviewed the records of 164 cases of primary liver cancer, including one of his own cases. His classification is still widely used.
