It is well known that HBs Ag in serum is more frequently positive in patients with HCC than in controls in any given area. The incidence of HBV markers in serum is five- to ten-fold higher in patients with HCC than in controls. Viral hepatitis may lead to liver cirrhosis through the chronic phase and go on to HCC. This process has been closely related to healthy carriers of HBs Ag in epidemiological studies.
