Posterior Circulation Aneurysms
Discussion of posterior circulation aneurysms is inevitably influenced by the work of Drake and his colleagues. Over the past 20 years, Drake has accumulated vast experience of posterior circulation aneurysms which is unparalleled in any other clinic in the world. In our own clinic, posterior circulation aneurysms represent just less than 10% of proven aneurysmal origin of subarachnoid haemorrhage and as a result my own personal experience in operating on nearly a thousand aneurysms is of the direct operative obliteration of just 72 posterior circulation aneurysms. Of these, 50 have been at the top of the basilar artery, ten at the posterior inferior cerebellar origin, and the others scattered throughout the basilar distribution. Twelve giant posterior circulation aneurysms have been operated on remote from subarachnoid haemorrhage.
