Prevalence of Larval Anisakid Nematodes in Fresh Fish from Coastal Waters of Hokkaido

Five hundred and forty eight fish consisting of 19 species were purchased from the Kyokuichi (commercial marine fishery) in Asahikawa city, Hokkaido. They were dissected and examined for anisakid larvae in the body muscle and in the viscera.

Five hundred and thirty one anisakid larvae were detected in 109 individuals taken from sixteen species; however, in 3 species no larvae were recovered. The worms were identified as larvae of Anisakis simplex, Pseudoterranova decipiens and Contracaecum osculatum. The former two species of larvae were found in both muscle and viscera of the fish, but the remainder were recovered only in the viscera.

The majority of larvae were found in the viscera, however, 26 larvae of A. simplex and 186 larvae of P. decipiens were detected in the muscle of twelve species of fish.

The average number of larvae in the muscle was calculated as 0.05 of A. simplex and 0.34 of P. decipiens.

In this study, it is suggested that the following seven species of fish are an important source of human anisakiasis: Gadus macrocephalus, Pleurogrammus azonus, Hexagrammos otakii, Hippoglossus stenolepis, Atheresthes evermanni, Paralichthys olivaceus and Sebastes taczanowskii.
