Immune Response to Anisakis Larvae in Healthy Humans

Abstract

Van Thiel et al. [1,2] postulated an allergic reaction as an important etiological factor in the mechanism of anisakiasis, and from subsequent histological studies on patients with this disease and experimental anisakiasis, it is generally considered as an Arthus-type allergic inflammation. However, there have been many cases reported which cannot be explained solely as an Arthus reaction [3]. On the basis of animal studies, the authors have already reported that local anaphylactic reactions in the digestive tract may also be involved in addition to the Arthus-type reaction especially in those showing acute symptoms [4]. Therefore, the course of the disease after infection by Anisakis larvae is believed to be closely related to the presence/absence and level of the antibody against Anisakis larvae in the infected patient.
