Ocean Dumping of Industrial Wastes
The oceans receive industrial wastes from outfall pipes, nonpoint sources, atmospheric fallout, and ocean dumping. No one knows the total quantity of these wastes entering the ocean. What is known, however, is that certain regions of the oceanic environment have been adversely affected by the presence of some kinds of waste materials. While some wastes discharged into the sea can be assimilated by the ocean without causing serious harm, others wastes cannot, and this has led to environmental damage. In order to understand the effects of wastes in the ocean, it is necessary to know (1) the types, quantities, and characteristics of the wastes discharged at sea; (2) the oceanographic conditions of the receiving waters; (3) important natural processes occurring in the ocean; (4) the biological effects of the waste; and (5) the extent of biodegradation of the waste substances. Although dumping of wastes at sea will probably occur into the future, every attempt should be made to minimize the wastes through waste-utilization schemes.
