Interaction between Fresh Water and Sediment in Hachinohe Harbor

Abstract

The effects of water quality improvement by removal of sediment are discussed. It has been known that the seawater pollution in Hachinohe Industrial Harbor No. 1 has continued to progress remarkably due to a release of nutrient from pollution sources and accumulated bottom sediment, and the sediment removal was performed as one of the countermeasures. The analysis of the surveyed results of before and after dredging was conducted comparatively in order to know the effects of water quality improvement. With dredging of sediment, the water quality was considerably improved by upgrading bottom sediment that influenced the degree of water quality, and, as a result, the benthos were remarkably rehabilitated.
