Waterfront Environment Planning for Urban Coastal Area

Conference paper

Several waterfront green zones in urban ports and coastal areas have been selected as the subject of case study in this paper.

The background of the study is the problem that artificial structures have replaced rich and pleasant natural coastline of Japan as a result of ports and harbours construction, expansion of reclaimed land and building of facilities for the prevention of disasters.

Recently, however, the citizens’ demand for the restoration of natural environment and the creation of pleasant and enjoyable space on the waterfront of urban communities has become stronger.

Thus, various plans have been implemented to create such waterfront environment in many urban ports.

In this paper, the conditions of desirable waterfront environment and the direction of the compilation of the manual for the creation of waterfront parks are examined through case studies.

It is hoped that this paper will be of some help to create rich and pleasant waterfront environment.
