Cardiorespiratory Function of Educable Mentally Retarded Boys

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to see if educable mentally retarded (EMR) boys differ from intellectually normal boys in cardiorespiratory function. Nineteen EMR boys were matched with nineteen normal boys of comparable age. Both groups took the Balke/Ware treadmill test in which the protocol involved maintaining a constant speed of 3.4mph while increasing the grade, from horizontal at the first minute, one degree each subsequent minute until the subject became exhausted. In analyzing the group test scores, it was found that the cardiorespiratory function of the EMR group was 20%-30% lower (HR P < 0.01, oxygen uptake (V̇O2) P < 0.01, V̇O2/kg P < 0.01, V̇O2/kg lean body mass (LBM) P < 0.01, V̇e body temperature, pressure, saturation (BTPS) P < 0.01) than the normal group, but there were no significant differences in O2 pulse and V̇Emax.
