Abstract
I have described the present state of diagnosis and surgical treatment of superficial esophageal cancer (Tis and Tl cancer). Better long-term survival rate was obtained in mucosal cancer cases, negative nodal involvement cases and negative vascular invasion cases. Regarding lymph node metastasis and vascular invasion, mucosal cancer was superior to submucosal cancer in terms of ability to perform curative treatment among Tl cancer cases. Thus I would like to stress that detection and treatment of mucosal cancer is most important to improve the long-term survival of esophageal cancer.
