Abstract

Since Boerhaave first described the spontaneous rupture of a healthy esophagus in 1772, case reports describing this illness have repeatedly appeared in the literature. Reports of large patient groups or prospective studies regarding the most effective treatment forms do not seem to exist. The untreated rupture of the esophagus has a mortality rate of nearly 100%. The elapsed time between the rupture and the onset of treatment has the greatest influence on the survival rate. The choice of treatment is also of critical importance and must be made in regard to the general health of the patient, the location of the rupture, and the intraoperative findings, which change depending on the elapsed time.
