Drug Sensitivity Tests for Human Esophageal Cancer

Abstract

Recently, considerable attention has been paid to the study of systemic chemo-therapy with esophageal cancer. Although relatively good response rates have been obtained compared with other gastrointestinal tumors [1], the prognosis is still worse than for other type of gastrointestinal tumors because of the poor general condition in many patients and the rapidity of tumor progression. To improve the response rate to chemotherapy and prognosis of these patients, the selection of chemotherapeutic agent is very important. The present study was designed to evaluate and compare the usefulness of in vitro human tumor clonogenic assay (HTCA), in vivo subrenal capsule assay (SRCA), SRCA with immunosuppressant (IS-SRCA) and in vitro adenosine triphosphate (ATP) assay with serum-free culture (SF-ATPA) as chemosensitivity tests in human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
