This paper discusses the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) main marine research programs for the 1990s: (1) ocean observations and research programs for the western Pacific ocean, (2) the research program for numerical prediction of disastrous environments and key techniques in offshore waters, (3) the comprehensive investigation of resources and exemplary exploitation on islands of Shandong Province, and (4) the study on the ecosystem at some key regions (the regions near Great Wall Station and Zhongshan Station) in the Antarctic.
