This chapter introduces some fundamental concepts regarding the environmental conditions of living creatures and how their forms and modes of locomotion have been shaped by the evolutionary process. In order to understand the difference in size among organisms of various species, their dynamic similarity is also discussed. By applying a “similarity analysis,” it is possible to surmise the ecology of extinct creatures and even of unknown creatures living on planets other than Earth, provided that information can be obtained on the prevailing environmental conditions.
