Abstract

Six years have been passed since a continuous metabolic monitoring system for artificially ventilated patients was developed in our ICU. The expired gases from a ventilator are collected in to the small cylindrical chamber and expired gas flow and concentrations of both inspired and expired gases are measured. The digital signals are sent from the bedside metabolic monitor to the central monitor so as to restore and retrieve data every one minutes basis for past 24 hours. About two hundred patients have been monitored continuously over 24 hours using the system.
