Abstract
Standards have rarely been applied to professional practice of any kind in the USA. In an effort to manage the risk of persisting injuries to patients and rising litigation against physicians, in 1985, the Anesthesia Department of Harvard Medical School established a committee to study the problem and propose solutions. This committee established a set of minimum monitoring standards for the Harvard Hospitals.
