Abstract
Addition of external substrate (methanol) in the process of nitrogen removal is necessary for more complete denitrification. Methanol is also directly converted to methane by methanogenic bacteria in sludge. Denitrification is generally assumed to occur before methanogenesis, as long as being in the presence of nitrate or nitrite. This might be result from an inhibitory effect of ionic nitrogen oxides on methanogenesis. Suppression of methane formation by nitrate (in soil under anaerobic conditions) has been observed by many investigators [1-3]. Methane evolution (during an investigation on denitrification and methanogenesis process using an acclimated sludge) was observed here to be inhibited by ionic nitrogen oxides; redox potential (Eh) had to be considerably reduced before methane production occurred. This paper focuses on examining charateristics of an inhibitory effect of nitrogen oxides on methanogenesis in methanol. Results correlating to oxidation state of nitrogenous additives will also be studied.
