Cytokinetic Resistance of Malignant Glioma Cells: Antineoplastic Agents During Maintenance Therapy
Maintenance chemotherapy cannot be simply a prolonged induction treatment. One of the important biological differences present during remission from untreated malignant gliomas is within cell kinetics. No definitive evidence concerning this phenomenon of human gliomas has been obtained, but it is thought that the tumors contain a large fraction of non-cycling cells during remission. Chemotherapeutic failure results from many factors, including drug resistance and poor accessibility of drugs. In this report, we examined decreased sensitivity to drugs due to changes of the cell fraction, i.e., cytokinetic resistance, for further understanding of maintenance chemotherapy against malignant gliomas . For this purpose, we tested the effectiveness of etoposide (VP-16), one of the cell cycle-specific agents, against the T98G glioblastoma cell line which possesses a unique biological character of being arrested in the G0 or G1 phase when deprived of serum [2–4].
