Abstract
We report the room-temperature reflectivity of single crystals of Bi2Sr2CuOy and several quasi-two-dimensional oxides (Bi2Mm+1ComOy (M= Ca, Sr, Ba; m=1,2), Bi2Sr3Fe2O9.2 and Bi2Sr2MnO6.25), which are isomorphic to Bi-Cu based high Tc oxides. A broad absorption band is observed in the mid-IR range (near 0.5 eV) in all the compounds studied, including the insulators, and a new absorption band near 0.3 eV is observed in the insulating systems. The infrared spectra of Bi2M3Co2Oy system show striking similarities to those of the high-Tc cuprates; 1) the apparent plasma edge remains unshifted for all Bi2M3Co2Oy with different M, 2) the intensity of the mid-IR absorption approximately scales with that of the free carrier-like absorption.
