Abstract

The development of pearl culture in French Polynesia is based on the “black lip oyster”, a medium sized shell, well characterized by the persistent secretion of black pigmentation (usually restricted to the prismatic external layer) in the external zone of the nacreous layer. This is the source of the black pearls, a high value product in the present situation of the pearl industry [1].
