Portability Cosideration of i386™-Based Basic OS (OS/CT)

  • Conference paper
TRON Project 1990

Abstract

OS/CT is a CTRON-specification Basic OS designed for use on the i386 CPU [’88, Oda]. It implements the [C+l] subsets supporting virtual memory systems. It has been certified in both the document and function validations offered by the TRON Association.

In the upcoming portability trial, the Extended OS programs to be ported to this system are File Management and Execution Control.

This paper outlines the hardware and software configuration of the basic system, and discusses various matters to be considered in porting independently developed Extended OS and application programs onto the Basic OS. These have to do mainly with aspects related to system generation, which cannot be specified fully in the program interfaces alone, and with architecture-dependent aspects that are closely related to hardware design. The approach taken to overcoming these difficulties is described; then some future issues are taken up with regard to developing a Basic OS so as to achieve even greater portability.
