Cardiomyopathy and Selenium Deficiency in a Caucasian Adolescent

Abstract

A 17 year old girl with chronic idiopathic pseudo-obstruction and short gut, had been on home parenteral nutrition for 17 months. Following diagnosis of severe selenium deficiency, she received intravenous supplemental selenium for the last seven months. She developed septic shock followed by cardiac arrest. At autopsy, the heart was enlarged, soft and flabby, and the histological findings were suggestive of cardiomyopathy due to prolonged selenium deficiency. Sepsis may precipitate cardiomyopathy in marginal selenium deficiency in a susceptible subject.
