Abstract
Platelet glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in six patients receiving prolonged total parenteral nutrition (TPN) with chronic gastrointestinal diseases was studied to investigate its usefullness for an indicator of Se status. During Se depletion and repletion, blood Se indices were meaured. Platelet GSH-Px activity significantly decreased and increased in one week. Plasma Se indices significantly changed in three weeks. Erythrocyte Se indices showed no remarkable changes during study period. Platelet GSH-Px activity may be served as one of the most sensitive Se indices and useful for assessing the short-term Se status in TPN patients.
