Abstract

The effect of sintering conditions on the formation of superconducting phases has been studied using the sample with a nominal composition of BiSrCaCu2Ox. The preheating at the temperature range of partial melting enhanced the formation of the high Tc phase. Further, quenching to room temperature after the preheating was more effective to increase the content of the high Tc phase.

The phase stability during annealing in various atmospheres was also examined. Oxygen stoichiometry was found to play an important role for controlling Tc’s in BSCCO system. Annealing in nitrogen caused to increase the Tc of low Tc phases and decrease the Tc of high Tc phase. The effect was more prominent in the low Tc phase and its Tc could be increased up to 90–100K.
