Abstract

New superconductors, Bi2NdxCa3-xCu2Oy and Bi2PrxCa3-xCu2Oy which do not contain Sr, have been successfuly synthesized. The powder x-ray diffraction measurements showed that they were of either single or near single phase having the “2212” structure. Tc’s for the samples sintered in O2 gas flow were about 10K higher than those for the samples sintered in air. It was likely that the increase in the hole concentration due to the introduction of oxygen enhanced the Tc. It was also discovered that, a number of compounds of Bi2(Ln,Ln*)xCa3-xCu2Oy(Ln, Ln*=lanthanides and Y) were superconducting, and the magnitude of Tc depended on the average ionic radius of Ln and Ln*. The highest Tc in these compounds was obtained at the composition of Bi2La0.25Pr0.25Ca2.5Cu2Oy: Tc(onset) and Tc(endpoint) were 65K and 45K, respectively.
