Interactions among Gd and Cu-2 in GdBa2Cu3Oy Compounds

Abstract

Electron-spin-resonance (ESR) and dc-susceptibility are measured for GdBa2(Cu1-xMx)3Oy (M= Ni and Co) compounds. Curie-Weiss susceptibility and the frequency dependence of the linewidth are observed. The Gd magnetism can be explained by the Gd dipolar and the exchange interaction in this system. The origin of the exchange interaction is the superexchange interaction via the oxygen on Cu-2 plane. The Gd linewidths largely depend on Ni concentrations. The results indicate that the substitution of Ni makes the superexchange interaction on Cu-2 plane weak.
