Total Condylar Knee Replacement: Late Results

  • Alan H. Wilde

The total condylar knee prosthesis is a minimally constrained, stainless steel, high density polyethylene, cruciate sacrificing prosthesis which was introduced by Insall in 1974 [1] (Fig. 1). His results of a 3- to 5-year follow-up showed 93% excellent and good results in 220 cases. The infection rate was less than 2% [2]. There were no cases of loosening of the femoral or tibial component. Posterior subluxation of the tibia occurred in 1.8% of cases, largely because the distance between the cut ends of the femur and tibia were not the same in flexion and extension. There was a provision for resurfacing of the patellar articular surface with a high density, polyethylene dome-shaped prosthesis. It was demonstrated that the number of good and excellent results improved with the use of the patellar prosthesis.
