The 10th anniversary of a professorship is a very special event, and what better way to celebrate it than to host a conference? In the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Kobe University Medical School, this special event was in honor of Kazushi Hirohata, the second professor of orthopaedics at this school. A most appropriate feature of the conference was its international flavor — guests came from Germany, Canada, and the United States. It is noteworthy that this international flavor reflects the commitment of Kazushi Hirohata’s professorship, since he has now many research and clinical fellows who have spent time in American, Canadian, and European centers. It is important also to know that the breadth of their, and thereby Kobe’s, orientation in orthopedics is increasingly wide; it has always had a very strong thrust in arthritis and rheumatic disease research.
