Abstract

Synthesis, structure and superconducting properties of two series of oxides, Tℓ2Ba2Can-1CUnO2n+4 and TℓBa2Can-1CunO2n+3, are described. The structures consist of perovskite-like Ba2Can-1CunO2n+2 units which alternate with either bilayer (Tℓ2O2) or monolayer (TℓO) units. A new superconductor (Tc ∼ 120K) with approximate formula (Tℓ,Pb)Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox has been characterized for the first time. Compositions in the Bi2Sr3-xYxCu2O8 system which traverse the insulator-superconductor boundary have been investigated.
