Microcirculation Dysfunction in an Environment of Weightlessness

A cell-free marginal zone is formed in blood flow through microvessels as well as in small glass tubes. The cell-free zone is called the plasma zone, since it consists mainly of plasma. The plasma layer is several micrometers thick and vanishes when the flow ceases. The thickness depends not only on the flow velocity but also on the tube diameter and hematocrit. Because of the biconcave disk shape and the deformability of red blood cells, the fluid mechanical treatment of radial migration of red blood cells becomes difficult. The mechanism for the formation of plasma layer is not yet clear.
