Abstract
The epithelium of the air tract contains basal-granulated cells, which comprise the respiratory division of the gastroenteric paraneurons. The paraneurons of the air tract can be divided into solitary and aggregated types. The former cells are dispersed among the epithelial cells, whereas the latter form specifically innervated corpuscles called neuroepithelial bodies (Lauweryns and Peuskens 1972), which are thought to be chemoreceptors for the partial pressures of O2 and CO2 in the inhaled air.
