Abstract

It was long believed that nerve cells (neurons) were highly differentiated entities with specific structures and functions that could be clearly distinguished from other cells (review: Cajal 1911). However, advances in electron microscopy, cytochemistry, and electrophysiology have gradually revealed that features which had been believed to be neuron-specific could also be shared by nonneuronal cells.
