Summary
In ten elderly patients with diabetes mellitus type II and mild to moderate hypertension, both of which had been present for several years, it was demonstrated by means of fasting blood sugar levels, urinary glucose excretion, and behavior of plasma glucose and insulin concentrations after a standard breakfast as well as by measurements of the glycosylated hemoglobin A1 that antihypertensive long-term monotherapy with about 30 mg nitrendipine every morning for 12 months was able to lower blood pressure reproducibly compared with placebo. Despite some apprehension derived mostly from in vitro experiments, nitrendipine did not impair overall glucose homeostasis.
