Use of Off-Set Beam Elements in a Model for Torsional Deflection Analysis of a Grid Structure of Open Cross Sections

  • Conference paper
Computational Mechanics ’86

Summary

This paper describes an effective procedure for analyzing the torsional strength of grid structures made of open cross sections, for instance, hydraulic gate leaves, hatch covers and the stern ramps of RO/RO ships. When these structures are twisted, their torsional rigidity and warping rigidity and the type of joints connecting their transverse and longitudinal members are key factors in determining their flexiblity. A simple modelling technique using off-set beam elements will be proposed for calculating the deflections. This technique makes it possible to include the above three factors.
