Abstract
The most general equation of weighted residuals for finite element method is presented and based on this the compatibility, equilibrium and mixed/hybrid models of finite element method are deduced. It is pointed out that with the weight functions being appropriately chosen these models will reduce to the wellknown ones which are based on the variational principles. The problem about the conditions of continuity of some variables acrossing the interface of elements and some other substantial problems in current finite element method are discussed. The possibility of more widespread application of the method of weighted residuals to practice is revealed.
