Interlaminar Stresses Analysis in Symmetric Composite Laminates under Bending

Summary

An improved quasi-three-dimensional finite element procedure is developed to investigate the free edge effects in symmetric composite laminates of finite width under bending. The results for a angle-ply (±45)s laminate and symmetric cross-ply laminates are presented. Emphasis is placed on assessing the behavior of stresses in regions close to ply-interfaces and the exposed free edge. The results presented will help better understand the failure mode and failure process of composite laminates under combined loading.
