Geomatic: A 3-D Graphic Relief Simulation System

A general command system for the simulation and display of 3-D views of relief maps is presented. This sytem is implemented on an Evans and Sutherland MPS connected to a VAX 11/780. This (3-D) Geomatic Graphic Relief Simulation System can be adapted and inserted as a software tool in a wide range of treatments (creating cartographic documents, optimizing an entity implant on a relief map with multiple constraints,…); it also provides the user with an opportunity for genuine interaction with the system in the choice and display of representations.

The 3-D Geomatic Graphic Relief Simulation System provides the user with an array of creation procedures which let the user obtain and display different realistic depictions of the relief of a terrain. These different realistic displays constitute, in practice, the basic tool for qualitative and dynamic use of a geographic data base, because the other entities (vegetation, hydrography,…) are supported by the relief. The system is interactive; it lets the user define a call sequence from a menu. A taskscheduler precompiles the call sequence and establishes the correspondence between the menu and the sequence of operations for which he controls the execution.
