We are seeing a dramatic increase in office automation, the introduction of computers into offices to save labor and provide services that were not possible previously. The functions that must be performed by office automation systems include the preparation of documents, electronic mail, business calculations, use of a data base, shared file systems, supervision of business operations, etc. The machines used in office automation are centered on computers—office computers, minicomputers and personal computers—and include word processors, microfilm units, optical disc image processors, laser printers, graphic terminals, audio input and output devices and facsimile machines.
