Abstract

Vietnam has been through a long period of tumultuous change comprising 30 years of war, nearly 20 years of division into North and South, postwar economic failure, and the transition from a socialist state-planned economy to a market economy. Given that situation, those things of the greatest importance to the Vietnamese have been national independence and unification during the war years, and economic development in the postwar years.
