Summary
The concept of virtual manufacturing, or virtual factory is to model and simulate manufacturing systems including design, machining process, assembly lines, and robots in addition to products on computers to create, analyze, improve them by using the technology of virtual reality. One of the main merits of such a simulation technology is that we do not have to deal with products and manufacturing systems separately since they are modeled as objects in a uniform manner.
In this paper, we discuss significance of the concept of virtual manufacturing and its impacts on manufacturing system designs in the future as well as technical problems to be solved to realize virtual manufacturing.
