Functional Probes

  • Motoichi Ohtsu

Abstract

This chapter describes functional probes which have a functional material on the tip of an optical fiber probe, especially those fabricated by a new fixation method proposed here. Figure 5.1 depicts a functional probe constructed from a metal-coated fiber probe. The size of the functional material is microor submicro-meter, which is equal to or less than an optical wavelength. However, it is worth noting that nanometric size is expected in the future with improved technology to be fully compatible with near-field optics.
