Characteristics of Soils Developed on Volcanic Parent Materials in the Barong Tongkok Area
Volcanic soils such as Andosols, which are the initial weathering product of volcanic ash, are well known for their distinctly superior fertility compared with other soils of the humid tropics (Burnhan, 1984). Volcanic activity has been very extensive on many of the islands of south-east Asia, and most particularly on the Sunda group (Sumatra, Java, Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, and Flores) (Burnhan, 1984), and volcanic soils as Andosols are often found in this area. These soils have quite different properties from other soils such as Acrisols derived from the Tertiary deposits which are the major soils in the lowland of East Kalimantan. The Andosols are known to exhibit higher porosity and a lower bulk density, a “fluffy”consistency, higher capacities of water retention, cation exchange, and phosphate sorption, and an ability to form stable associations of mineral and organic matter which give their topsoils a characteristic dark color (Burnham, 1984).
