Differential Diagnosis from Spinal and Brain Disorders
In order to diagnose motor paralysis and muscle weakness accurately, it is necessary to consider the mechanism of human autokinesis. Voluntary motions are made in the premotor area, basal ganglia, or cerebellum, and are sent to the (corticocerebral) motor area. Signals from pyramidal cells in the motor area are sent to ventral horn cells in the opposite side via the pyramid of the medulla oblongata. This is referred to as upper motor neuron.
