Abstract
Seeds of various plant species exist in forest soil (e.g., Nakagoshi 1985; Garwood 1989; Pickett and McDonnell 1989). Viable buried seeds are regarded as potential or initial plant communities, in contrast to plants growing on the ground (Nakagoshi 1985). Quick plant recruitment from a seed bank takes place even if the vegetation disappears as the result of disturbance.
